Gratitude
An Attitude of Gratitude has the most amazing effect on your life!
Benefits of Gratitude
Gratitude is an emotion expressing appreciation for what one has as opposed to for example, a consumer-driven emphasis on what one wants. Gratitude is getting a great deal of attention as a facet of positive psychology. Studies show that we can deliberately cultivate gratitude and can increase our well-being and happiness by doing so. In addition, gratefulness and especially expression of it to others, is associated with increased energy, optimism and empathy.
Gratitude - develop this attitude
Gratitude is a powerful force, which is used in the law of attraction and in the science of getting what you desire in your life. The more grateful you are for what you have already received, the easier it is for you to experience new levels of abundance and bring more things into your life.
In this article we consider how you can develop an attitude of gratitude.
Make an Effort to Say Thank You Always
We are generally taught as children to say thank you when someone does something for us but we also often find it easy to begin to take things for granted, especially when something happens regularly. Make an effort not to slip into this attitude of taking things for granted, but to always say thank you no matter how small the thing may be. By doing that, you develop a kind of karma positive bank account. You never know when you may just need it!
The benefit of giving compliments
When Mark Twain said "I can live two months on a good compliment," he only told half the story. While the person who receives the praise enjoys feeling noticed and valued (and is motivated to do more of the same), the giver can also bask in the connection. With every compliment given, a bond is strengthened, trust is built and conversation encouraged. Potent stuff!
Here are five do’s and don’ts to make the most of giving and receiving of admiration:
Keep a Gratitude Journal – this helps a lot and focuses the mind
One of the easiest ways of developing an attitude of gratitude, particularly if you are disciplined is to develop a gratitude journal and daily note down the things you are grateful for.
I have started this system in my ordinary diary where I also keep my to-do list. At the start of each day I write my to-do list for the day and then as I tick the last item off that I complete I make a list below that of things I have to be grateful for that day. It can be anything small such as a cup of coffee, the bird chirping outside or the mouse in the garden.
Learn to Focus on the Positive within the Negative
We all go through difficult times but within those difficult times you can still learn to focus on the positive and be grateful for the positives in the situation. Learn to appreciate what you had before this event and write it down in your gratitude journal. You may not be grateful for being sick in a hospital bed for a few weeks but be grateful that you have time when you can be quiet, away from the rush of life and focus on what's important again or learn something new, such as: what is the purpose of being here, why did this happen to me, what is the message for me? You may not be grateful for having been laid off from a job but be grateful that new opportunities await you and that you have learnt enough to reach this new stage in your life.
Gratitude is extremely powerful and it is important for us to learn how to be grateful in all circumstances, even when things may not look like they are going well. By doing so we will find it easier to attract those things that are important to us, into our lives.
The benefit of gratitude
Gratitude is an attitude that we need to develop. By saying to our partner or our children “Thanks for being in my life” or “Thank you for choosing me to be your parent – I am very grateful for that”. Do you have any idea what it does to that person and then how they feel and respond to you. I have counselled many a client where this was the one thing that they so desperately wanted to hear from someone – “Thank you for being in my life”. It would have made all the difference in that person’s life. They may then not have found it necessary to go and look for it somewhere else or gone and done things to get that recognition elsewhere or in a negative way.
Imagine how the angels above feel when you say thank you to them for something that you have asked to be manifest. They are so delighted that they will then give you more. Imagine that!

Here are five do’s and don’ts to make the most of giving and receiving of admiration:
- DO be genuine. False praise is easy to spot and it undermines your trustworthiness.
- DON’T give backhanded compliments, such as "You throw a ball well for a girl."
- DO be as specific as possible. Vague: "I like how you redid your living room." Specific: "I like the colour choice of your living room walls. It’s a perfect accent with the rug and drapes."
- DON’T brush off a compliment given to you. It’s like returning a gift.
- DO smile and say thank you when you receive a compliment.
